How is the estimated MP3 size calculated?
The estimate uses the formula: bitrate (kbps) × duration in seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000 = size in MB (decimal). For example, 3 minutes at 128 kbps gives 128 × 180 ÷ 8,000,000 ≈ 2.9 MB. Real files may vary slightly due to metadata and ID3 tags, which add a few kilobytes.
What bitrate should I use?
For speech, podcasts, and voice recordings, 128 kbps sounds clean while keeping files small. For music or anything where audio quality matters, use 192 kbps or 320 kbps — 320 kbps is the maximum MP3 quality and the safest choice for archiving music.
Why does my video file get a much smaller MP3 than the original MP4?
Because video makes up most of an MP4's size. MP4 contains both a video track and an audio track, and the video track is usually many times larger. When you extract just the audio as MP3, only the audio portion remains, so the output is naturally a fraction of the original file size.
